‘Transformational’ Design for CCC’s HQ Improves Operations

After a decade or two, office space gets tired and completely uninspiring. The design from a generation ago doesn’t support modern work styles or reflect the company’s brand and culture.

That was the case with Consolidated Container Corp., a leading provider of packaging solutions for beverages, cleaning supplies and other consumer goods.

The company’s 20-year-old office space had tall cubicles that isolated employees from each other and prevented collaboration, and the dated look of the space was hurting recruiting efforts. Long dark corridors and private offices didn’t let much natural light through, making it feel like a cave.

There weren’t enough electrical outlets and USB charging ports, and most conference rooms lacked video conferencing equipment and made it hard to stay in touch with employees across the company’s 60 locations. The office space was actually hurting business operations.

It was time for a change.

We worked with CCC leadership to engage employees every step of the way, starting with culture surveys that revealed that 60% of employees said they’d outgrown their space and 85% said the office was a negative or neutral reflection of the company.

Together with Cooper Carry, we helped CCC completely transform their headquarters office into a vibrant, energetic space at 2500 Windy Ridge. The entire office is flooded with natural sunlight and has top-of-the-line technology including lots of electrical/USB chargers and a new security access system designed and installed by Transcend IT.

There are a variety of work areas where employees can collaborate on projects, have small group discussions, hold larger group meetings or find a quiet space to do some heads-down focused work. Branding elements including custom artwork with CCC’s red logo create a sense of place for visitors. 

Our data gathering and analysis helped us negotiate favorable lease terms that were a double-digit improvement on the initial proposal from the landlord. Importantly, CCC also has generous options on taking more space to support future growth.

“It’s transformational for our company,” said Jeff Brubaker, Senior Vice President of the Operations Service Group at CCC who oversaw the headquarters relocation. “This is unbelievable space. I couldn’t be more pleased.”

The results are significantly better than executives expected when they began thinking about changing offices a couple years ago, Brubaker said.

“It’s 10 times better than anything we could have imagined. The outcome was 10 times better, the process was 10 times better,” he said. “They really looked out for us and got us a good deal economically. This is the right kind of space for us, and it fits our culture.”
